What are PUGs?

PUGs (Pick-Up Games) are organized competitive matches where players are matched into balanced teams for fair, skill-based gameplay. Unlike ladder matches where you bring your own team, PUGs create teams on the fly from available players. Track your ELO rating, win rate, and compete against the best players in balanced team matches.

Getting Started with PUGs

First, join our Discord server to participate in PUGs:

👥 Join a PUG

Join Discord: Click the button above to join our server
Get Notified: Use /pug addme to subscribe to PUG announcements
Join Sessions: React with 👍 to PUG announcements you want to join
Play: Teams form when the queue closes - check Discord for voice channels

🎮 Create a PUG

Find the Button: Look for the "Create PUG" button in the announcement channel
Fill the Form: Set time, game, team size, balancing mode, and format
Wait for Players: Players will join by reacting with 👍
Start Match: Use "Start Now" button when ready, or wait for auto-start

💡 Pro Tips:

Use /pug stats to view your ELO rating and match history
Team balancing modes: random (auto), elo (skill-based), or draft (captains pick)
Your ELO rating starts at 1000 and changes based on match results

ELO Rating System

Starting Rating

All players begin with an ELO rating of 1000. This baseline ensures fair matchmaking as you play your first matches.

K-Factor System

The K-Factor determines how much your rating changes after each match. It decreases as you play more games:

K=32: First 10 matches (rapid calibration)
K=24: Matches 11-50 (settling in)
K=16: 50+ matches (established rating)

Higher K-Factors mean bigger rating swings, helping new players find their skill level quickly.

Rating Calculation

Your rating change is calculated using the standard ELO formula:

Change = K × (Actual - Expected)

Where Expected is your probability of winning based on team ratings, and Actual is 1 for a win or 0 for a loss.

Team Balancing

Team ELO is calculated as the average of all player ratings. If teams are uneven in size, the smaller team receives a +50 ELO handicap per missing player to compensate for the numerical disadvantage.

Rating Floor

Your ELO cannot drop below 0. While mathematically possible to lose more than you've gained, the system prevents negative ratings.

Match History

Every match is recorded with your ELO before, after, and the K-Factor used. This creates a complete history of your rating progression over time.

How it works: Your rating changes based on match results, with bigger swings for new players. Teams are balanced by averaging player ELO ratings.
