How much skill do the "fighters" have to have (i.e. non-commanders)?

I bought the game, played it once and was a bit bored (haven't played it since).

I'm curious - for that that have invested time in it - how much skill is there in fighting?

When I played it as a fighter, it seemed like there wasn't a whole lot to the whole aiming/fighting thing. It was more like, get close to the enemy, press left mouse button, repeat until myself or the enemy died.

Note: I'm used to Tribes where there is considerable skill in the fighting element.
I haven't played tribes so wouldn't know how it compares to that, but their is a signifigant amount of skill involved which is easily seen when looking how fast most people get owned by the vets.

[20:07] s2slothy: yeah, and I never got around to eating dinner last night"

The players ahve gotten a good deal better. What used to be simple point and click has become much more interesting. Good fighters can effect the outcome of the game in a major way. It doesnt have the elegance that tribes has, but its combat is a truckload of fun.

Check with Triston when you get time. Hes one of the best players in the FPS part of the game and he may be able to answer more of your questions.
