Will San Francisco break the fall of the Golden Gate Bridge jumpers?

According to unofficial accounts by supporters of a suicide barrier who keep track of the grim statistics, Sean Moylan was at least the 15th person to jump and die off the Golden Gate so far this year. At least 1,600 people have committed suicide on this bridge since it opened in 1937.

For decades, the board had explored various options aimed at stopping the jumpers, from a 9-foot tall barbwire fence to a laser beam that would zap people if they climbed over the edge — something that was ultimately ruled out as too dangerous. The one idea that kept coming up again and again was a net — which more than four decades later is what bridge officials have finally settled on.

On Friday, the board will consider a $76 million plan to install a steel safety net that would extend from the bridge 20 feet below and 20 feet from the side of its span. Made of stainless steel cable painted the same color as the bridge, the net would collapse slightly if someone were to fall in, making it difficult for a person to exit without assistance.

I'm just glad to see someone offering up the sound solution of bridge control. This bridge has killed more people than most other mass killings combined it appears. Enough is enough....lets net this sucker off. Lets pad those corners. Lets make this world safe again by admitting that enough is enough here folks.

i think after we net this puppy off we should lower the bridge back down to a safe distance. we should put emergency boats along the edges. hire life guards to save those who might be too sick to save themselves.

mental illness of our sad society, our decrepit nation, is no joke and we need serious solutions now folks.

I foresee a surge in jumps before the net is installed. Might be interesting to do a time lapse video of the bridge for the next year.

best to put suicide nets on the front of those things. slow them down. and pad any rough edges.

Where's the mention of hiring more state employee's to monitor the bridge and question all pedestrians before permission is granted to walk across? Oh and the walking across a bridge service fee....

I smell a Cali only TSA type organization to keep people safe from them selves.

That states breeds more stupidity than humanly possible.

in the coments section a poster trolled the hell out of everyone on this article. he mentioned the need for more signs, more fines, for trying to kill yourself.

how if littering is a grand, illegal use of the carpool lane is 251, that this should be a couple thousand dollar punishment.

that the signs should be written in english, spanish, and mandarin due to proximity of Chinatown.

that much like gun control and the prohibition...to the failed drug war....a few more laws and signs should truly to the trick. you talk about people coming unhinged at his post.....lololololercopter
