So we went to this family's home in BCN today for a Xmass meal. We brought part of the meal to cook there, we cooked it all there, started from bfast all the way to early dinner, whole day.
This guy is very low key, raised in south west of the England, just high school. Very unassuming, great sense of humor, rabid reader, good conversationalist...you would never guess he buys bad debt to collect on it. This last year he went into Russia. He started in the UK with small debts from "private persons"...moved on to small business debts, then medium and he stayed at that level before he crossed borders to Hungary, his wife is Hungarian...he does the same thing there...
buys bad debts from medium sized companies and then collects on them, he also has individuals with bad debts, of course.
Just this past week he spent it in Moscow, he told me, 3 days JUST moving his business addy at the tax office, he was required to go there personally, as the business owner, and when u hand in the form, they take a picture of you handing in the forms (!). Heavy snow meant heavy traffic, it was chaos going into the city, the whole thing took him 3 days, like I said. In between, he got bored and his "people" were busy collecting, of course, so he decided to go with a couple of them on runs. He explained that in one ob the blocks they went into, 10 story high, no working elevator, they go in and open the door..inside a family of 4 live in one large "boxy" room, kitchen bathroom living room sleeping room....all are one, just one...except...the shower....it's two hall showers for the entire floor outside in the hall, of course. damn soviets.
when he came out he asked his guys how many like these they had on the list, 'almost 200'...blody hell we need to increase our bottoms he says (meaning...get bigger debts, not that crapy shit, lower balances spread across many people)...it's not as easy to into medium sized company debt in moscow as it is personal debts...he said...but he is getting his foot in and when he knows more people then go after what he truly wants.
usually he lives here in Bcn, he seldom goes on runs, he does it sometimes to kill time between flights if there is nothing better to do when he visits his offices.
He told me he got into it 15 years ago...him and his business partner were in the fiber optic supply side of the tech business..lost their shirts in the consolidations and while walking thru a port he saw a large yatch he liked and wondered who the owner was and what he did. He later found out the guy was a venture capitalist that started as a bad debt collector...small time, working for himself, not for others, the other guy had started doing it himself.
not the guy whose house we went to. He called his business partner with the idea to do the same, they pooled 100,000 and started that way, but they hired some thuggy looking guys on a percentage basis to pay their 3 "clients" a visit...the thuggy guys were the bad 'cops' and he was the good cop that showed up a bit later.
Now that they are also in Russia, he really seldom goes out, to say never, really, he just did go out this week out of curiosity.
