So.

Anyone here ever done volunteer work for their community? Im thinking of volunteering some of my time. What websites are there that list help needed?

I would like to hear your story (or stories) and experiences.

I do and have for most of my life. I used to do it through church when I was younger. I worked the soup kitchens and food shelves in downtown Minneapolis. I've been in the JayCees and am currently a Lion. Both of the clubs I just mentioned have membership dues. I also donate money and/or time to local projects(either on my own or through the Lions Club).

For me, it's very rewarding. I just like helping other people.
I'd rather pay a huge fine than give back to the community!

God that was hard work.

I filed paperwork for the Red Cross for awhile. No good stories. It was incredibly boring. They had a storage shed full of documents that had no organization.
If your serious...

Talk to your Chamber of Commerce. It's a good place to start, if they are not directly involved, they can point you in the right direction. Depending on the size of your city, you may have a soup kitchen that loves volunteers. Most cities, regardless of size, have a food pantry that usually needs help with lifting. My city is always short on volunteers and has help from the prisons nearby (Short timer, non-violent, and good behavior inmates).

Additionally, but not my favorite, are churches. Over the summer, people helped two apartment complexes repair their playground areas for the kids. It was nothing huge, we didn't turn them into a "Chucky Cheese" or anything. But a few bolts here, some paint there, and a ton of soft cedar wood chips later...the kids can at least swing again.

ANYTHING you plan to do with a city park or city grounds, check with your local parks and recreation FIRST. No matter how good your intentions may be, there is insurance, liability, and unions. More often than not, they do NOT want "outside" help. It's strange, but more often than not, true.

It's getting cold out. Coats for Kids is a great program and runs through the Salvation Army. If your area doesn't have this program, you might want to liaison with them and spearhead that campaign. You might not actually hand kids coats, working mainly with logistics (collections, communication, call centers (I know, I know, it annoys people), or transports....but it's a really good feeling to know kids are warm because of your efforts.

I'll see how much of your post was bait before I post more.

AB+ baby!!

The worthless blood. LOL

AB+ can only donate to other AB+....BUT, AB+ is the universal receiver....meaning, we can take blood from anyone. My blood is, for the most part, worthless to donate, and yet, I still do. Strange.

Volunteer Firefighter. It got me in to my career as a paid firefighter. Still vollunteer to this day. :z

But one time when I was younger and an idiot I had to do community Service, I worked 40hours at the Water Treatment plant in my county. Smelled like shit, it was terrible.
FSB: No need to fret, I understand why you are skeptical.

Anyway, here is something that will help alleviate some of your fears:

Ive given blood for over 20 years -especially given my old line of work and because of the rarity of my blood type. BTW: You are looking at AB+ all wrong. Look at its red blood cell compatibility -that's HUGE compared to everyone else. "Worthless" blood would O- considering its severe limitations.

That was just a line from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. No Star Wars quotes this time!

I've volunteered at my local animal shelter several times, which was essentially exercising and interacting with the dogs/cats, getting them out of their cages so they can be cleaned up (both the cages and the animals).

The blood bus pulls in at work once every few months but I never eat breakfast, and would probably pass the fuck out.

Plasma donation scares the shit out of me, albeit, probably out of ignorance. I think it's the whole, "here's your blood back" aspect.

If you know, please, why do they give it back? Is it because so much blood is needed to gather enough plasma?

To me what you do is personal and private. It can be very rewarding. There are other places that will help you match your skills, time, location, and type of organization you desire to contribute.

In both plasma and platelete donation, think of it like skimming the blood. Once they take the plasma or platelettes the blood would not be useable for donation, but your body regenerates the missing components very quickly.

Its painless ( as painless as giving blood but you get two needles - one for blood going out and one for blood going in). Takes a lot longer than giving blood, but usually they will run a movie if you go to a donation center.

You can sell your plasma in certain places.

Plasma donation

The human body typically replaces plasma within approximately 48 hours, if the donor keeps a healthy diet that includes adequate amount of fluids and proteins. In the United States, federal regulations state that an individual may donate two times in a seven day period, with a minimum of two days in between donations.

How is my plasma removed?
Donating plasma is similar to giving blood. A needle is placed in the vein of the arm and the whole blood is collected into a sterile, highly-specialized medical device. The plasma then is separated from the red blood cells and other cellular components, which are then returned to the donor, normally with sterile saline solution to help the body replace the plasma removed from the whole blood. This process is referred to as plasmapheresis.

What is the average donation?
In the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates how much plasma a person can donate. Donation may be made no more frequently than twice per week with no more frequently than twice per week with two days in between, and the amount a person can donate is predicated on weight

Donating Platelets

During a platelet donation, a small portion of your blood (about 1/4 pint at a time), is drawn from your arm and passed through a sophisticated cell-separating machine. The machine collects the platelets and safely returns the remaining blood components, along with some saline, back to you. After the donation you can resume your normal activities, avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise that day.

If you are a donor with Type AB blood

You may be ideal for a simultaneous platelet and plasma donation. Anyone in need can receive your plasma, it is universal. Only 4% of the U.S. population has this blood type

Thanks Bigguns.

Perhaps an alternating schedule of blood one month, plasma (x2 within the month) the other.

Again, greatly appreciated. Although, I think I'd feel better about considering it IF I knew someone who had done it. I mean, it sounds lot like giving blood from the sound of it. People do it everyday right, if it wasn't safe and accepted, "they" would stop it, right?

Isnt O- the universal donor?

edit, it is, how can that be worthless?

http://www.redcrossblood.org/learn-about-blood/blood-facts-and-statistics

"Facts about donors

* Only 7 percent of people in the U.S. have O-negative blood type. O-negative blood type donors are universal donors as their blood can be given to people of all blood types.
* Type O-negative blood is needed in emergencies before the patient's blood type is known and with newborns who need blood.
* Forty-five percent of people in the U.S. have Type O (positive or negative) blood. This percentage is higher among Hispanics – 57 percent, and among African Americans – 51 percent."

SS you already do community service. Helping educate the liberal tards that the world they see thru their ideological views isn't real. You should get an award for it!

Killet, I am looking at it from the diametric view of AB+ can receive from all, O- cant. They can only receive from type O. That is a severe limitation in my eyes.

So what kind of award we talking here? The ~Snake~ Medal Of Valor or what?

Im curious why some would state what others need to do, yet they offer nothing of what example they have set despite the fact they want everyone here to know all about them.

SS, I agree from a blood receiving POV and . . .that is probably the most important POV when TSHTF

I have done it a few dozen times starting in 1990. It does seem weird to think of the process, but plasma and pherisis donation have been going on since the 1950's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_donation

Only 3 percent of people in the U.S. have AB-positive blood type. AB-positive type blood donors are universal donors of plasma, which is often used in emergencies, for newborns and for patients requiring massive transfusions

- Each year in the U.S., roughly 11 million liters of source plasma are donated. On average, a plasma donor gives .8 liter of plasma per visit.

- Only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood – less than 10 percent do annually

- Platelets promote blood clotting and give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live.

- Cancer, transplant and trauma patients, and patients undergoing open-heart surgery may require platelet transfusions to survive

- It takes 130 plasma donations to manufacture enough therapy to keep one patient with primary immunodeficiency disease healthy for one year.

- One liter of plasma yields roughly four grams of immunoglobulin, which is used to manufacture therapies to treat people with immune deficiencies. The average infusion needed for a person with a primary immune deficiency is 35 grams.

I'm with FSB, I dont mind giving Blood (O neg here) but take the blood, suck out the plasma and keep it all, I dont want it running through your machine then back into me, who knows whats been through that machine or how well it was cleaned, just keep it all thank you

Have you ever looked at that machine? There's a plastic tube pack that fits into the machine which your blood goes through. Your blood never enters the machine, everything is done inside that one time use plastic tube system.

Exactly right. Set of tubes that get a one time only use. Donations are slow because of the time to set up the equipment and time to slowly process the blood.

I've personally done it a few dozen times. The process is done about 20 million times per year to barely meet demand. Out of that 20 million times, how many times have you heard of a plasma donator having an issue?

nope never seen one . . still, just keep it all, I dont want it back

Oh, so it is a troll thread.

If you say so; I wont try to convince you otherwise. Curiously enough, that's directed at only one other person, yet you get upset and feel the need to defend someone who so far, only cares about himself. Intriguing.

Everyone has something to contribute so far, even you. Well except one, and that MUST mean its a troll thread. Impressive deductive reasoning, I must admit.

Now, lets get back to you: Why didnt you stay at the RC and ask for a more challenging task?

Or what else have you done? Or did you quit volunteering?

Lastly, if this offends your sensitive nature as a "troll", then ignore the questions above and dont post.

I donate my A negative blood regularly.
