Apple unveils the new iPhone 4S... which is to say... I dunno.

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2011-11-28 · 42 posts

I'm on Gizmodo.com, checking it out every now and then.

Looks like I may upgrade my ghetto phone to an iPhone 4... or maybe if they lower the price of the Androids... but I have a lot of crap on my iPod Touch that I don't want to buy again on the phone....

hmmm.
Wait for the iPhone 4G

The 4s is only 3g

I've been due for an upgrade for the past 3 years... I've just been procrastinating, trying to decide first, whether to get a smartphone and pay for a data plan... and secondly, which phone platform.

So, I finally convinced myself that I want a smartphone (no NEED for one), but which phone?

This is what I am using now.

They don't even make it anymore... I went to Verizon to get a new battery, they looked at the phone and gave me this look like I had 3 heads.
"Upgrade?"

I'm WAITING!!!!
I just upgraded to the Samsung Nexus

Love this phone, fast as hell, great sound, and of course its not an iphone. It was only $50.00 with my yearly upgrade from Sprint.

The new features of the Iphone 4

1. New Design
The iPhone 5’s new design is quite possibly the most exciting new feature, as it will allow users to distinguish themselves as superior to the filth that still cling to the iPhone 4. Also, the new design will be structurally dense enough to bludgeon any iPhone 4 users who come too close.

2. Hands-Free Texting
While previous iPhones have boasted the very popular feature, “Texting,” Apple is debuting a revolutionary new feature that enables hands-free texting. It’s called, “Talking On The Phone,” and experts say it will change the way people think about communication.

3. Enhanced Sense Of Entitlement
The iPhone 4 will give users an unsurpassed sense of entitlement. Apple promises that looking down your nose at other smart phones and the obviously not-wealthy and undeserving idiots who use them will be easier than ever. Near someone with a phone that ISN’T an iPhone? The iPhone 5 will automatically discharge shit directly onto their head, so you don’t have to.

4. Upgraded Operating System Bullshit Or Whatever
The new iPhone will house what many experts believe will be a ground-breaking new operating system bullshit or whatever. Blah, blah, blah it will make things faster and streamline the internal process of who gives a shit. The system will be run by the A5 dual-core processor, which fucking Christ let’s move on.

5. Drugs
That’s right… drugs. Apple has built hardcore illicit drugs into the iPhone 5. A few taps on the touchscreen and you’ll be skipping down LSD lane, licking candied rainbows and hugging snuggly pink walrus puppies. Having trouble staying awake at work? Snort a line of coke out of the headphone jack. Bored at a family reunion? Lick the screen, grab a pillow, and crawl into a cupboard while the heroin melts away your feelings.

IPhone 4 rocks. I'm gonna wait for the 5 though. I read sprint will have the 5 until first quarter 2012.

The 4s is available on all the networks. I read sprint shelled out a ton of cash for the iPhone 5 exclusivity for some period

I'd be very surprised by that.

Sprint Scores iPhone 5 Exclusive Thanks to $20 Billion Deal With Apple?
By Jonathan S. Geller

Reuters

Sprint has entered into an agreement with Apple to purchase over $20 billion worth of iPhones over the next four years, the Wall Street Journal reports -- around 30 million iPhones.

It’s said that Sprint won’t even break even on the transaction until 2014, which is surely a huge risk on Sprint’s part. So why make the deal?

BGR.com has been told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 -- yes the real iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S -- as an exclusive. And it will be a 4G WiMAX device. AT&T and Verizon will launch the iPhone 4S and get the iPhone 5 some time in the first quarter of next year as an LTE device. Globally, the iPhone 5 might be available as a 4G HSPA+ device.
Looks like this was about price structure and dumping phones to combat China iPhone knockoffs and undercut Androids.
the next google phone is going to be announced soon. made by samsung. that will be the phone for anybody that wants android.

well google has the nexus series of phones, kinda called Google Phones cause it is made to google's specs. the first one was made by HTC. the second by Samsung. It's a phone that has zero skinning or alterations of the Android OS by the carrier. Samsung is releasing the next one also, the Nexus Prime

Wireless speed ratings are all marketing nonsense IMHO.

I could be getting 5Mbits a sec, then go down the road 500 feet and get 1MBit a sec.

My AT&T iPhone 4 is faster in my area than my friends T-Mobile 4G phones or Verizon iPhones.

I like to know the specs of my phone, but real world performance usually doesn't match the rated speeds, by a wide margin.
Talk about serious upsale. The 64GB's of memory is valued around $20-30. The $400 phone probably only costs $215 to produce though they sell it to carriers for $849. $849-$399= $450 that the carrier has to subsidize. Nice little profit there of $634 for Apple per device. No wonder they are sitting on close to $80 Billion of liquid capital. If they sold 10 Million units, that is a profit of $6.3 Billion.

The iSheeple will still buy it cause its new and improved though they didn't have Steve Jobs to sell the magical part of it. Quad core processors and 16 megapixel cameras plus LTE are expected to be in the Galaxy S 3 due out in March 2012. Not seeing where Apple is actually innovating here and I'm sure that I'm not alone on this.

It isn't when it's been tested in many different areas.

What's so disappointing about this one? I mean, technically speaking, it's a significant hardware upgrade from the 4. You don't like that it's not called the iPhone 5 or is it something else?

I'd say that as far as iPhones go, it's a logical step. If you want an iPhone and are willing to resign with a carrier for a new contract, I don't see much reason to wait until next year.

Was really just hoping for a redesign and screen size bump.
Apple is most likely in the process of engineering a custom LTE solution while providing an iPhone 4 to 'catch up' to the rest of the market. If they had implemented now it would be horrid battery performance, thicker, and outsourced hardware... which moves away from their model and trends. This was really, expected. We'll be skipping this model for our business phones.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S II is phenomenal. And will be our personal phones. I'm willing to overlook samsung's trend with touchwiz snafus in the past while looking at one hell of an amoled screen and insane performance. That said, I'm definitely looking forward to see Apple's LTE push- no one can deny their innovation in the hardware arena... it definitely will push the other manufacturers.

Besides, Adobe Max's keynotes yesterday and the day before were far more exciting

Here is a little known secret: I dont know what the fuck to do with it actually. Ive learned how to send a text, make and take calls, and turn on the camera, and load angry birds.

Other than that Puddin, I dont know anything else what to do with it and what not. Completely lost in the sauce. Gods honest truth. I see all kinds of apps but I dont mess with them. I guess its the caveman in me and you can feel vindicated, lol.

I am open to advice / education about these things.

you'll pick that shit up fast, you are a smart dude.

just think of pc apps, just on a smaller scale. you can get all kinds of utility apps from planners to calendars, document editors, picture editors. widgets that can update your favorite news sources. i have a great alarm clock app called Gentle Alarm, very customizable.

i lost my phone last night or i'd type a list of what i have installed.

certain apps i use all the time include a brightness control widget, weatherbug elite, a twitter app called plume, facebook app, springpad (a note taking app + more), a voice recorder app, a calendar widget, google voice widget, folder organizer (let's you label and categorize apps to organize them), extended controls widget (easy access to control all the phones features from gps to wifi)

however, i did read about this this morning and found it interesting.

Introducing Siri: DARPA’s Ghost in Apple’s Machine

[....][videos of Apples history]

Apples SiRI phone. whats in a name?

Look closely at the name: Siri. What letters stand out?
See it yet?

S i R I.

SRI = Stanford Research Institute.

It turns out that Apple’s Siri used to be SRI’s Siri, and SRI’s Siri is… Are you ready? A spinoff of DARPA’s PAL (Perceptive Assistant that Learns) program, which SRI called CALO (Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes).

Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes

SRI International is leading the development of new software that could revolutionize how computers support decision-makers.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), under its Perceptive Assistant that Learns (PAL) program, has awarded SRI the first two phases of a five-year contract to develop an enduring personalized cognitive assistant. DARPA expects the PAL program to generate innovative ideas that result in new science, new and fundamental approaches to current problems, and new algorithms and tools, and to yield new technology of significant value to the military.

SRI has dubbed its new project CALO, for Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes. The name was inspired by the Latin word "calonis", which means "soldier’s servant". The goal of the project is to create cognitive software systems, that is, systems that can reason, learn from experience, be told what to do, explain what they are doing, reflect on their experience, and respond robustly to surprise.

The software, which will learn by interacting with and being advised by its users, will handle a broad range of interrelated decision-making tasks that have in the past been resistant to automation. It will have the capability to engage in and lead routine tasks, and to assist when the unexpected happens. To focus the research on real problems and to ensure the software meets requirements such as privacy, security, and trust, the CALO project researchers will themselves use the technology during its development.

SRI is leading the multidisciplinary CALO project team, and, beyond participating in the research program, is also responsible for overall project direction and management and the development of prototypes.

The project is bringing together leading computer scientists and researchers in artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, knowledge representation, human-computer interaction, flexible planning, and behavioral studies at 22 organizations:

Shadowy government project spins off Siri to help direct your affairs

October 13, 2008

Conspiracy theorists will love this one: A computerized assistant that can help you manage your day to day life, built atop an artificial intelligence platform developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the United States’ internal military research group. Siri, the startup building the assistant, is today announcing $8.5 million in venture funding.

As befits its spookish origins, Siri isn’t saying a great deal yet about what it will do. Co-founder Dag Kittlaus, who licensed technology from DARPA’s CALO (Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes) project, calls it “a smarter, more personal interaction paradigm for the Internet.” Unfortunately, that’s about as specific as calling Google “a thing that finds stuff.” Those who want a sneak peek at Siri will instead have to look to CALO.

So here’s what we know about CALO: It’s a concerted effort to take the first real step toward artificial intelligence, with five years of work and $200 million in funding to date. Rather than being immediately useful, it learns about the user over time, much like a real personal assistant would. As it learns, it becomes capable of making logical associations and initiating its own actions.
[.....]

People are going to pay a lot of money to have their asses tracked to within a couple of meters by a device running a civilian version of DARPA’s soldier’s servant software.

The most disturbing aspect of this is not what the iPhone 4s is going to be phoning home to Apple (which is unknown), or the invasion of The Complex into most aspects of our lives, but the fact that, in general, people would think that you were nuts for having these reservations at all. I mean, what could possibly be wrong with re-purposed DoD AI software running on a mass market consumer device that persistently reveals the user’s location to the state?

Ah well, give em what they want.

Thanks man! That is very much appreciated. Rest assured Ill be asking you alot of questions.

If I discover anything good, Ill make sure to pass it your way. Though I suspect you are way ahead of most people and prolly stay up on all that stuff given your recent adventures into entrepreneurland and looking to help market your brand (which is a very smart call).

BTW, speaking of which, how's business? My impression is that all is going well since you the only thing I recall is you mentioning a brick and mortar place for a base of operations.

Dirty dirty capitalist swine.

I just got one of these at my new job (costs me nothing, unlimited everything, totally cool to use personally) that I started on Monday. I have an iPhone 4 that I bought and my previous company reimbursed my monthly bill on. I've dicked around with the EVO and it's a nice phone and I damn sure won't argue with the price. But I prefer my iPhone.

Uhhhh, that was said in jest.
