Ugh...Dancing Lessons

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2007-12-04 · 21 posts
Blech.

We went to a club for a friend's birthday, and Lauren hit the dance floor. I hit a road block. Almost developed a new definition for "break dancing" when I nearly slipped and broke my head.

I need dancing lessons.

I suggested ballroom dancing because I have disillusions of grandeur and somehow think that a fantasy of being a decent salsa dancer could become reality. She suggests something more pragmatic, like hip-hop.

Has anyone in here ever taken dance lessons of any sort? What were your experiences?

Dude, you are a musician. Dancing should be easy. As long as you can keep time in your head, you should have no problems learning.
OMFG would I have LOVED to have had a video camera there!

And there's not enough dancing lessons in the world that could make you look cool.

Several musicians that I know can't dance. Keeping the beat is no issue. Getting all of your limbs to work in a synchronized / coordinated fashion is the problem.

Salsa is pretty easy Questor. Once you learn the basic steps, you are a dancer!

Taking the ban stick out of your ass would be a good start...

Seriously though, I want to take lessons with my GF. I can ballroom dance okay, if I can remember all of the steps, but any kind of contemporary shit, and I look like a string puppet. I was camping 2 months ago and nearly burnt down an entire state park when I was trying to do the Soulja Boy and knocked a candle over which caught fire to the papers and the one sleeping bag.

Anyway, I think it's a good relationship-building tool since it's something we can do together and it's an aerobic exercise so there's a healthy element too.

Good luck with that Q.

Mrs cimat1984 and I took some basic ballroom dancing lessons a while back, and it was pretty painless. Although fairly clumsy, once I relaxed and got into it, it went pretty well.

The wife and I took ballroom dancing lessons at the local highschool AFTER we'd gotten married... it was okay... you learn the most BASIC steps of a few dances so you don't look completely clueless on the dance floor.

Ehh... for $60/6weeks worth of lessons... it was okay.

Afterwards, we actually liked one of the dances we learned. The Swing (not swinging... sicko!) So we took a class (same type of thing), at the local highschool for East Coast Swing/Jitterbug. I thought it was a lot of fun. Learned some more swing moves, learned moves that the teacheer didn't recommend (flips and shit)... nothing I really remember.. but it was cool.

It was the time when the Squirrel Nut Zippers were popular and stuff... semi-popular... We ended up going to a place in the city called "The Supper Club", because they had a big band night.

Boy, did we feel out of place... I got dressy, but there were guys in full out Zut suits... We knew some east coast swing moves, these guys were full out West coast swing MASTERS. Just watching them was so cool.,, Would still like to learn West Coast swing dancing. So many more moves than a basic STEP-STEP-rock-STEP, or TripleSTEP-TripleStep-rock-STEP. And way more twists, spins, and turns.

Learning Hip-Hop? Fuggit. You don't need to know that shit. Just bend your knees a little, have your girl mount your thigh, and slowly gyrate your hips like you're having sex... that's all the kids do nowadays, anyway.

Take a hip hop class, and you'll probably be doing dance moves like this:
This might sound gay...WAIT it doesnt sound gay it is gay But my mother made me take dance classes when i was younger like the Box, Fox, etc. I still can't dance and was scared by it

This is ALL you need to know.

Stick your teeth out,
Stomp your feet,
Now Punch the Midget.

Now you're dancing like a PRO!

Yes!

I'll just say that Salsa is half a world away from Ballroom. The only similarity tween them is you have a partner. Ballroom would be good for your delusions of grandeur but a decent Salsa dancer is simply ded shexeee!

We're talking about a club here. Why this thread is about ballroom dancing and salsa is rather strange

Questor if the club is bad enough to only play hip-hop... just pretend you're in an MTV music video If the only thing you can do is a Mr. Bean dance while humping a girl's leg.. I suggest you stay at the bar the rest of the night. Best is to just watch and learn from others. Just dont do this.

BREAKING NEWS:

Real footage of Questy post-lessons:

You should talk to this girl for lessons:

Well, the point was that I can't hang with her on the dance floor. I need to get up to speed. But, we're also getting married, so I need to get up to speed on the wedding dancing too. I don't have the time for both, so I was asking for personal experiences by others here.

Wedding dances, pffft. All you do is hold each other, looking directly in the eyes, sway back and forth from foot to foot while moving in a circle. You've been there, nothing you've likely to have forgotten...unless 40 really knocked something loose.

Practice! When you're cleaning house or in the shower, washing the dishes or brushing your teeth, practice. Move your feet in time with the music and the rest will [eventually] come naturally,

If it doesn't, make sure Fluffy is on hand so he can take video, post it here, and we can have a bit of a laff

jks mate... just jkn
ps - you have to wear the same pants as the first kid or it doesn't have the same effect
