Milk for cats?

Does anyone definitively know if giving milk to cats is bad?

Lauren, who has been in cat rescue for years, said she read somewhere that it's not good to do this, but I got the impression that it was just something she heard from an informal source.

I need empirical data that shows it's either harmful or harmless. Please include links.

Well, we feed the cats on the farm with cows milk; don't see any skinny/dead cats in the barnyard do ya?
I can't provide empirical data, but I have been giving cats milk pretty much my entire life and never saw one keel over dead.
Generally, mammals tend to loose their ability to correctly digest milk as they age, which is why people sometimes can become violently ill as they grow up, become lactose intolerant. At least thats the limited understanding I have of the subject.

So in short - if you want your cat to shit like a cannon all day feed it nothing but milk.

A little dab of milk wont hurt your pussy.
Just shave em and send them on their way.......

Q. Should I feed my pet milk?

A. Cat drinkingDogs and cats do not have the proper enzymes to properly break down the sugar in milk which is called 'lactose.' You may have heard of people who are lactose-intolerant. They are also missing these digestive enzymes. If the proper enzymes are not present, the lactose remains undigested and tends to ferment in the intestine and cause diarrhea. Some pets can tolerate a little milk, others, none at all. If your pet enjoys and appears to tolerate milk, you can give your pet small amounts. Better yet, give your pet one of the special cat or dog milks on the market that have had the lactose removed.
