Found this on the web earlier. Apparently Wal Mart is having a sale on Saturday morning where you can get the 80Gig PS3 and ten blu-ray movies for $499.

http://holiday.ri-walmart.com/?section=secret

If you go there and then click on "Preview Saturday's Specials" it'll show you the 80GB PS3 with ten free blu-ray movies for $499.

Just thought you shoppers might want to know.

That is a good deal. Why the eye roll?

Considering that's $250.00 worth of free movies, I'd say so! Assuming each Blu-Ray movie is only $25.00 each.

No.. PC whore I guess.

Spending 400/500 bucks on a console (no games), let alone thinking some overpriced dvds are a good deal, is pretty nuts.

Well, as both the owner (and lover) of both PC gaming and Console gaming, I have to disagree. $499.00 for a console with enough gaming and multimedia power to provide tons of quality gaming is a great deal. Add to that, those "overpriced DVDs" are High Def, and look 20X better than standard DVDs. You've obviously never seen a quality High Def setup, so I can't blame you there. Before I got into the High Def crowd, I too thought HD was only slightly better than standard. Boy, was I wrong.

As far as your price comparison, let's compare.

$499.00 = PS3
$1,000 = Quality HOME built PC (For those of us that CAN do it. More if you can't)

Each has it's overpriced games.
Next year, when Crysis 2 comes out, that $400 video card you just bought for Crysis will be low on the totem pole again. Want to get console framerates? Slap another $XXX.XX down on more upgrades for your PC.

See where I'nm getting at? If it wasn't for FPS games and porn the internet, I wouldn't need my PC. And slowly that's starting to go the way of the dinosaur with Internet browsers on current consoles that support Mice and Keyboards.

pretty soon theyll just be throwing them at passerby's.
I'll tell you what is frustrating...I bought and HD-DVD since it was cheap. The movie selection in most stores is ass. at inception the dual format was nice. HD on one side, DVD on the other. The newest movies...not like that. I will say this though...Shrek the Third was stunning!

My wife swears that there's a difference between Standard Animated Movies, and HD Animated Movies. I haven't paid attention if there's a difference or not, but I wouldn't think so since there's no "camera" filming the movie.

How was the actual movie? Funny as the first and second? Better? Worse?

500 bucks for a ps3? No thanks.

Turn that into 10 movies AND 10 games and I might, just might, consider it.

First they'd have to make 10 games for the system no?

I wanted to buy the system last month just for the DVD player and just assumed I get a game system with it. but when I really went down there and saw how little and shitty the game selection is for the PS3 I opted against it.

10 movies plus the system is a great deal even if just for DVD viewing.

The day you use your TV as a PC screen, lemme know.

Consoles will never replace PCs or Laptops, except for the occasional game and movies, which on top of the overpriced console you still need an overpriced TV for (to get the 'full' out of the console).

Since I play games, watch movies, internet, work, and everything else with my laptop (even if it is less 'quality'), I see absolutely no worth in a 500 DOLLAR console.

Of course that'll change once I get a job.. but thats the day when I spoil myself with a nice TV too, which hopefully wont be as much a ripoff as a console then.

Cmon, admit its maybe worth 250, but not 500 (consider what you get out of it).

I'll definately let you know when I can use my 56" 1080p TV as my PC screen.

You'll stop drinking the Hatoraide once you get a setup like the one above. Trust me.

And that's fine. That's your opinion. However, those that can afford an "overpriced" console with a Blu-Ray player, for their "overpriced" TV, aren't kicking themselves in the ass for their decision. I don't regret making my purchases at all. I enjoy High Def movies at night with the wife unit, and enjoy playing quality games like Assassin's Creed, and Encharted when the kids go to bed.

Good luck with that. With your logic, you'll more than likely end up with a 720i TV, and an overheated XBox 360. And if you want to wait even longer, then you'll be 10 years behind the game when old technology gets "affordable" in your eyes.

Cmon, admit you have no idea what the system is capable of, going only on what you *think* you know about it.

Capable doesn;t mean shit when teh console lacks GAMES!
The PS3 is collecting a good group of games that will be out by the holidays:

Resistance, Call of Duty 4, Uncharted, Folklore, Ratchet and Clank, The Orange Box, Assassin's Creed, Guitar Hero III, Stranglehold, Oblivion, Haze, and Rock Band to name a few.

And next year we've got MGS4 and DMC4 among others.

I mean seriously, the ole "the ps3 has no games" argument is officially bullshit.

When you buy a new console how many games do you buy at the same time?

I just named 12 games that are all worth buying. Are you going to need 12 games right at once to play?

No.

The PS3 is by no means the best system out there, but at least get a legitimate point if you're going to bitch about it.

I've got Ratchet & Clank and Assassin's Creed for my PS3 and they are both pretty awesome games. I could have gotten Assassin's Creed for the 360, but if you don't have either system I think the PS3 can now be a viable option.

Personally I'm glad I got mine on sale (20% off ftw!), but I was planning on getting one eventually.
Well there is some good games, but alot of the game you mentioned are multiplatofrm. And to tell the truth if a game is on consoles only ill chose to play it on my 360 over my ps3.

To be fair, when people say the PS3 doesn't have games they don't mean the ones that the 360 shares as well.

But yeah, even if the PS3 doesnt have the 360's library it still has good games out now and more coming (though it doesnt have a monopoly on good games coming).

My point stands.

Claim: the PS3 has no games

(read: the PS3 has no good games)

Retort: *my list of games*

Sure, the 360 and PS3 share games. My point stands though.

The claim is that the ps3 doesnt have many good games that only it has. Oh it is growing but right now i see only about 4 games that are good for the ps3.
lol These threads always spark fanboy wars.

I doubt Zëus posted this to start one. He was just giving a heads up on a great deal for those interested in buying HD movies.

If I were looking to buy some Blueray movies along with a player, I would probably buy that.
Do you think one of the reasons Blu Ray's aren't dropping in price like the HDDVD players, is because it would effect PS3 sales?

Even if you only want Blu Ray, it's kind of silly to buy a stand alone $500 player when you can spend the same and get a console/player combo.
Fluff, I guess at this point we just disagree on what is 'worth' +half a thousand dollars.
The ability to play some games which you can also play on PC, and basically just watching higher quality movies, is not 'worth' the 500+ bucks. I might pay 300 for it.

Like I said once I have money though, I'll close my eyes and buy something like that, but I still won't admit it is worth the content over price tag! Consumer whores! Arggh!

I didn't think my wife's new minivan was worth $22,000 either, but with the cost of making the product, and paying the workers to put it together, it was a bargin.

See the point I'm getting at? There's a LOT of shit in this world that consumers think is overpriced, but in reality, it's not. When you get a job, and actually get income coming in, you'll sing a different tune.

Oh, and Zeus, you forgot Heavenly Sword, and Lair, which are both PS3 only titles, and both damn fine games.

Also there is a nice deal with a Sony 46" 1080p LCD (yes p not i) and PS3 with 5 movies and a game for $1999 going on at our local Best Buy (Boston).

I realize this... but that isn't how I decide how much to pay for something.

If 10 years ago the actual cost to make a digital camera was 500,000 dollars, no one would buy it. But then Fluffy would say: Wow! All the labour and parts involved, thats honestly worth the money!

I know thats not how you value something, so dont give me the R&D, labour, technology costs crap

Half a grand for a game console. End.

I agree. And thats because there's a consumer whore in all of us . BUT if you're strapped on cash, the return for your money is not worth a PS3.
