The leaders of Iraq (news - web sites) and Jordan warned yesterday that Iran is trying to influence the Iraqi elections scheduled for Jan. 30 to create an Islamic government that would dramatically shift the geopolitical balance between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in the Middle East.

Iraqi President Ghazi Yawar charged that Iran is coaching candidates and political parties sympathetic to Tehran and pouring "huge amounts of money" into the campaign to produce a Shiite-dominated government similar to Iran's.

Jordanian King Abdullah said that more than 1 million Iranians have crossed the 910-mile border into Iraq, many to vote in the election -- with the encouragement of the Iranian government. "I'm sure there's a lot of people, a lot of Iranians in there that will be used as part of the polls to influence the outcome," he said in an interview.

The king also charged that Iranians are paying salaries and providing welfare to unemployed Iraqis to build pro-Iranian public sentiment. Some Iranians, he added, have been trained by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and are members of militias that could fuel trouble in Iraq after the election.

"It is in Iran's vested interest to have an Islamic republic of Iraq . . . and therefore the involvement you're getting by the Iranians is to achieve a government that is very pro-Iran," Abdullah said.

Very good to see other countries in the Middle East can see the significance of this. Just as democracy came to Russia, so shall it be in the Arab nations. It wont be easy or soon, but it will happen.
BTW if you read the article there is a lot of evidence that Syria and Iran are paying attackers to kill people. That's some bad shiznit

Arab nations have an opportunity right now to lobby Muslims living in Iraq both Shiite and Sunni Arabs by trying to re-translate how Iraqis view themselves. The Arab League should start a campiagn in Iraq by pushing Arabs of both sects, to first consider common religion and shared ethnicity over the difference they have in sects. IF Saudi Arabia wasn't such a discriminating nation they could have an effect but with a population of about less then 1% Shiite citizens, many Shiites in IRaq wont give a shit what the Saudis have to say about the matter, but Syria, Jordan, and Egypt should.

Egypt led the Arab world with the Pan-Arab movement that made being an Arab the prime nationalistic identity of all Arabs.

Now in this religiously extremeist toime in the Middle East, we see religous differences in Islams 2 major sects having a bigger impact then the fact that they are all Muslim and Arab.

Iran's influence in fact i think maybe created the Wahabbi Sunni influence in the Saudi kingdom today.

SNAKE, their is a bigger picture to this then anyone has looked at yet. If Iraq elects a shiite goverment that becomes religious and aligns itself with Iran. And Iran goes Nuclear, the United States will be sought by most Arab nations to provide security to Arab nations as they will fear the same thing happening in Lebanon next if Iranian influnce succeeds. The Arab street might start to focus on Shiite power as it does the Palestinian issue, this could have a seriuos impact as it pressures Pals to accept peace with Israel, so Arabs can go on to confront the largest threat to them which at that point will be Shiite theocracy.

Saw part of it. Can you imagine a Syria, Iran sort of Middle east. Jesus that is scary.
It would be a islamic civil war. its quite an amazing thought, it would end up radicalizing bouth if that is possible.
This again is very important. Iran is now being labeled a terrorist country even by Arab and Muslim states. This helps the USA, France, Britian and Germany with dealing with them IMO. The is a bigger chance the security council would vote in favor of resolutions

Iraqi Official: Iran Is 'Number One Enemy'
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&ncid=736&e=4&u=/ap/20041215/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_iran
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites)'s defense minister on Wednesday accused neighboring Iran and Syria of supporting terrorists in his war-ravaged country.

Hazem Shaalan also accused Iran of backing the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group headed by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and said his country's opponents want "turbaned clerics to rule in Iraq."

Shaalan said Iraqi authorities obtained information about Iran's role in Iraqi's insurgency after last month's arrest of the leader of the Jaish Mohammed (Mohammed's Army) terrorist group during U.S.-led operations in Fallujah.

"When we arrested the commander of Jaish Mohammed we discovered that key to terrorism is in Iran, which this the number one enemy for Iraq," Shaalan told reporters in Baghdad.
