"U.S. lawmakers are considering amending the Constitution to allow foreign-born American citizens to run for president of the United States.

Senator Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, believes that the constitutional requirement that U.S. presidents be born in this country is both outdated and discriminatory."

wha? is it OK for the US Prez to have a foreign accent? Can she wear India's traditional clothing? What is the benefit of changing the Constitution? Are we really out of talent? Or is the 2 party system hurting the country by keeping good American leaders alienated?

think?

No. Absolutely not.

We have a hard enough time keeping natural born U.S. Citizens from being treasonous, fighting against our own troops in foreign countries, and aiding the enemy, we don't need to worry about foreigners running for the Presidency of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
Natives only, even if it is The Governator.

I have a hard enough time stomaching Kerry's wife being in the White House (and I'm still voting for him )

I don't believe so. I still think you need to be born on American soil, which does include military bases and embassies in foriegn countries. (This I know for sure because that was the case with my officemate. He's 1/2 Spanish 1/2 US American, born on US base in Germany)

Should or shouldn't, Sam?
they should not be from a forigen country either. (and that dosent mean "we were all from a different country") they should also have had to be born
here in the good ol' usa just like the president.

*edit for those that are too lazy to scroll right.

I don't see why not. If a person is good enough to pay taxes, serve in the military, etc, he/she should have the right to run for office. Whether they get elected or not, is a different issue, but the opportunity should be there.
i don't think anyone but pure americans should be entrusted with such a position...meaning born on american soil and american citizens

Your use of the word "pure" really bothers me.

Questor, lets get a lock on this one before I get banned.

Yeah no shit, what is "pure"? Native Americans? Or the White, black, asian, hispanic people?

This country was built on immigrants, there's no reason to change that now.

As long as they are a legal citizen, educated and experienced, then I see no reason for them not to choose politics as a profession.

I thought there was something that said you had to be here 40 (30?) years to run for Presidency in the Constitution...

Because anyone else's loyalty is suspect. And that right is not about giving privilege or a benefit to 'pure' Americans. It's about ensuring a person loyal to the US gets such a critical job.

And the original post's reference to 'pure' didn't seem to imply race or genetics, so I fail to see the problem with it except someone trying to make something out of it it's not.

This issues it coming up in part because the Republicans want to run Arnold for President. That speaks volumes to the legitimacy of this movement.

The Ohio State's Admissions Policy
I am mixed on this….

Part of me wants someone I know will be loyal to their native country first and foremost over anywhere else. (so I am for leaving it the way it currently is)

Part of me also understands that modern Americans don’t have any freaking clue how great this nation is, and how deprived it can be in other places around the world. It is this spoiled, lethargic, ‘what can you do for me attitude,’ that has me wanting to give people with a more global understanding a try. (so I am for changing it)

I’ve have yet to be decided one way or another really. What I do know is that there should be a minimum requirement for the number of years you have to be a US citizen before you can become eligible for President.

< 30 years sounds good IMO.

Either you are entirely too sensitive or you are trying to turn this statement into something it's not.

I go farther than "should be born here" I would rather the president have spent his first 12 -13 years here.

It is not a question of paying taxes or patriotism. I like arnold, but if he was president and some shit put austria (as i live and breathe I almost typed austrailia)at one end of the stick and america at the other, I don't want our commader and chief having second thoughts.

I know it doesn't sound warm and fuzzy, but sometimes what makes sense doesn't.
remember we have 3 branchs. They are suppose to provide checks and balances. Personally I think yes an immigant who becomes a citizen should be able to run only after a certain period of time. For example living here for 20-30 years. Tho there is danger even tho it's all crazy talk of having what you might call a sleeper.

"American-born", legally speaking, means "born an American citizen or on American soil." This explicitly permits Americans born abroad, as well as Americans born in America under English rule.

What is Constitutionally interesting is that the literal reading of the Amendment could easily be construed to permit Canadians or Mexicans to run for President.
