Tribes Closed Beta Version 0.1.619.0 and Version 0.1.621.0
Note: A small patch 0.1.621.0 was deployed on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, to fix a small handful of bugs.
Major Highlights:
Converted all fully automatic hitscan weapons to use projectiles. This includes the Rangers Assault Rifle, Technicians TCN4, and Infiltrators Rhino SMG.
The game is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was at the start of beta release. The devs are listening to EVERYTHING the community is saying and making the requested changes quickly. I'm confident they will get it fixed correctly. Couldn't be happier with the direction the game is headed.

You have no idea what you are talking about.
Some of the changes they are kind of making.. alpha testers screamed for 6 months ago.
I am optimistic. But there is still a long ways to go.

That was alpha testers. Bring the game to the masses and THEN see what they say. And Hi Rez did exactly that and are now "quickly" changing things the way the masses want it.
I'm actually having fun with the game now. Still needs a few more changes though of course.
Have no idea why you flew off the handle at hitstix like that in your opening line. Lame
I dunno bubbles, when t2 came out, it was soooo damn buggy and broken I couldnt even run it (was a decent pc for the time) for quite a while. and even then, the community went thru a series of mods till classic became the standard. so its not like t2 didnt have a really bumpy road on its way to being the game we know and love today.
as for ascend, i really dont mind their take on tribes at all. and its gorgeous. but wtf, broken mechanics and physics trash any good work theyve done. Im not really sure whats so difficult with taking their preferred model (t1 or t2) and base the movement/speed/inheritance and physics in general on it. right now, moving is shaky and jittery, and shooting isnt intuitive since the physics are jacked up
still have hope tho. and if they fix the important stuff, i.e. basic mechanics of their game, it should turn out to be a legit tribes game. we will see... Post edited by JT at 12/17/2011 10:00:25 AM
but thats the equiv of saying that i love apples but hate strawberries.
surprisingly, after spending over a month playing the thing, it turns out I like strawberries as well as apples! too bad this strawberry is rotten atm
what im getting at is what I sorta alluded to in my previous post. those that want t2 with updated gfx should just stay away. its simply just gonna piss u off. but, on the other hand, theres some players, myself inc, that kinda like the take on tribes. but when selling a whole new concept of something long established, like tribes, yer best bet is to have the core of the game solid as a rock, and not so utterly broken as it is now.
yes I know its beta. and yes, im still playing. but its really just to keep me interested while I wait to see if they fix skiing, movement in general, inhereitance, and the like.
imo, they are really poor designers who make short sighted decisions, this just tells me that they didn't build the fundamental infrastructure for a good game, and now they're having to try and fix it from the top down. It needs to be fixed on a foundational level. I really don't think they know how to maximize what they've got. It's design problem imo, they need to pick a direction and go with it. Glad you like it, I'm one of those people who would just get pissed off
T:A has classes. :/. Oh, and each class will be "viable". And new classes will be continued to be added. It's just wrong-headed that they are trying to fit what they perceive as "tribes" into a business model that it is ill-suited for, in the most bizarre way possible.
Even though they have these classes, traditional roles for CTF have been marginalized. HO, Farming, HD, etc have been ignored or altered into something that no longer resembles T1, T2, or even T:V.
Throw in the fence, shitty maps, no mapping, poor weapon design/lack of creativity in that area, trash movement system, horrid physics and the shear arrogance I've experienced coming from 70-80% of my interactions with devs have convinced me to not bother with it any longer.
I play games for two reasons. Firstly I've come to love playing games in a manner wherein I take every aspect of it seriously. Right now that is T2. I love it. Spending literally hours perfecting routes or farms, watching demos with other players and talking strats, these things I find "fun" in a serious game. These things either don't exist in T:A or lack the depth to keep me interested.
The other reason I play games is to just in general fuck around and have fun. 1,200M headshots or raping tanks with jets, this is the reason I play BF3. Nova and I have a lot of fun doing all the silly things that that game provides. T:A does provide some opportunities to do this, but they are more along the lines of "trolololol, X is so OP I got 40 kills on you nubs". And one key difference of BF3 and T:A(at least for me) is even though BF3 has many, many unlocks (which honestly I don't like) at least I can DO everything when I bought the game. I'm not gonna dance on the "Grind or pay" strings Hirez and other game devs are using, and I'm not gonna pay ridiculous amounts of money on what I only perceive as a "standard" amount of game content, and not even high quality at that.
I bet part of the reason they're reducing the hitscan weapons is because it's too easy to make auto-aimers for hitscan weapons. The game isn't even out yet, and they're already in a pretty poor position as far as dealing with cheaters.
t1 and t2 felt limitless in play........this game is like "go for flag, die, turn around do it again." the bases are too close.....the maps arent REALLY that big. game sucks overall.

one big problem is that you cant create a route on teh fly for capping like you could before in T2c. To get 'good' speed over 200, you have to start with a big drop and maintain/build on it until the grab. There is no ability to wait behind a hill for a return or a distracting run, then ski down 1 hill, DJ, grab and go. Doesnt work that way anymore. If you do that you'll be going about 120 or so with little hope of making it.
as far as the hitscan phasing out...idk it hasnt been too big of a deal IMHO.
still tho, like said before, its good for a few maps a night...but im definitely not addicted. i used to give up hours of sleep after my wife went to bed. now i could give a shit. it just doesnt have the draw. plus, the playerbase is TOTAL noobs right now. its really tough to keep playing with these teams.

how much did you pay to get access to these abilities
Tried TA the last couple days, its ok. Hope those lighter armors feel much faster than the default; it feels quite slow. Also hope they can declutter the screen and remove all that award/token/xp/purchased skills bullshit.
Got a new dude yesterday, the pathfinder or whatever. Contrary to what Red implied, I thought that type did feel much faster and lighter. Now it's the acceleration/deceleration curve that bugs me...
