Simple way to run the old patch when running the new one...

Alright, there's a very simple way to run the old patch when running the new patch. There were many files updated in the new patch. There were also many files added, so you cant play on any servers running the new patch with the old Tribes2.exe alone. But you can play on the old patch servers with the new patch installation by following these instructions. And yes, I know this has been discussed, but most do not know of it.

Here are the instructions:

1. (NEWLY ADDED) Make sure that you FIRST startup T2 before doing anything else and clicking "Launch", then "Settings", then click the "Game" button and make SURE that the "Skip Intro" is enabled. You cannot have the intro play on startup, because it was updated in the patch. If the intro isnt disabled, you will get a black screen.(thx Rodent)

2. Download the old Tribes2.exe here: Old Tribes Exe

3. Place it in your Tribes2/Gamedata folder. (this is vital it must be in the Gamedata folder or nothing will happen when you start it)

4. Right-click the "Tribesold.exe" you downloaded and placed in your gamedata folder and "Create Shortcut" or you can Create a Shortcut through the "Send to" menu and have it placed on your desktop. Either way its required to use a shortcut to run T2.

5. Then right-click the shortcut you made and click "Properties". Then add the command " -online" without the quotations on the end after the target line. it should look something like this:

C:\Dynamix\Tribes2\GameData\Tribesold.exe -online

Make sure there is a space between Tribesold.exe and -online. You can additionally add you login too, like this:

C:\Dynamix\Tribes2\GameData\Tribesold.exe -online -login NAME PASSWORD

Anyways, just keep in mind that this is for the people that are running the new patch. They can play on the old patch servers with those simple instructions. Btw, I promised Janus that I wouldnt flame anyone, so no flaming me please.

Btw, if you have a space anywhere in the target like this:
C:\Program Files\Tribes2\Gamedata\Tribesold.exe

Ya see how "Program Files" has a space, then you'll need to put quotations around the target like this:

"C:\Program Files\Tribes2\Gamedata\Tribesold.exe" -online
"C:\Program Files\Tribes2\Gamedata\Tribesold.exe" -online -login NAME PASSWORD

Beauty. Those of us who only troll these forums when they need ret fixes and cheat warnings appreciate this greatly.

However I would like to see the admins pick up the ball and post an "Official" TWL position on the patch up here too... locked and ready so we can cut the bs when scheduling matches. The rules say we go with the latest and greatest, the spamm out tells us to be ready to go unpatched and we see posts in these forums telling us that if we can't agree on a patched/unpatched server the match is just cancelled. Maybe I'm blind but a nice easy post would save us some grief till the repatch comes in November. Or just revise the rules.

I would have to take an educated guess on this, and say that maybe your installations are correct. This isnt a "crappy fix". There's no reason it shouldnt work.

Try (and this sucks I know) reinstalling T2. Then after installation is done, install the huge new patch, and try the old T2 exe from my first post.

Basically, the main exe is what is changed on the client side. Now we all know there are other changes, but most are server-side. One thing you need to keep in mind, is that if the command line isnt perfect, it wont start up. T2 cannot be started from the main exe alone.

I'm not getting a blank screen, but when I check out the servers, I only get the 25026 ones, I don't get the 24834's..... I miss them!

ive had a guy whos writes scripts for t2 do it and not work.

its really not hard

put exe in base folder
make shortcut with correct path. both were done correctly even with screenshots of the folders so i could see they were in the right places. and it still didnt workf or them

OK I figured out why it wasn't working for me, maybe this will help some of you.

Lets say you back up your original T2.exe file, and name it something with a space in it, like I did, such as "Tribes2 24834.exe" ok then you make a shortcut to it. Windows puts quotes around the shortcut, so it looks like this:

"Cblah blah\Tribes2 24834.exe"

OK anyway, then you put in your -online and maybe -login. But then it gets mad and tells you this doesn't exist, which it doesn't, so you take away the quotes to make it work, right? so your shortcut looks like this now:

Cblah blah\Tribes2 24834.exe -online -login NAME PASS

with no quotes. The problem, I realized, is that the 24834.exe part is actually not interpreted as part of the filename, but rather must be being supplied to the NEW Tribes2.exe file, as an argument. Then you are starting the new T2 file, thats all. Anyway that might be hard to understand, I'm not clear in explaining it, but the point is, DON'T HAVE ANY SPACES IN THE FILE NAME.

Then it should work. I think. well it does for me.

and xenon, I dono, T2 is so messed up like that, same configs not working the same on same systems and chit along those lines

ya no kidding. some ppl dont have the HD space for two installs. and patched up when twl said that the new patch is official. now they are fucked cause they shouldnt have to reinstall everything to a lower version and not play classic.

Poor xenon didnt read the directions. As I said above, "it MUST be placed in the Gamedata folder or when you start it, nothing will happen"

You'll also need quotes if any of the directories have spaces in their names, like "Program Files".

(And I think it was stupid of MS to name that directory that way, instead of just "Programs". I avoid spaces in my directory names on my own machine, using underscores instead. Makes it much easier to type on the command line, because I don't have to worry about quoting everything.)

yaya habit of typing base. its in the correct folder. its in gamedata. the same as tribes2.exe. just used to typing out base

Got our whole team workin with this fix in a matter of minutes. All sorts of configs. Only fixes were that some did their shortcut wrong and others forget to let the new tribesold.exe through their firewall. Both have blank screens that go away when corrected.

Well, after that bit of debugging (which I'm sure few of you understand) the FIX to the 'Only shows the background image' problem is that you have to DISABLE the Intro movie.

The "pushDialog(): Invalid control: GGIntroGui" is where I got the hint from.

So, fire up the patched .exe (25026) go into Settings->Game and make sure that 'Skip intro movie' is turned ON.

Seems to work fine after that.
