Intro.
For most of the tweaks in this guide you'll need to manually edit the configuration files that holds the settings for Raven
Shield, because most of the options and settings into in Raven Shield isn't available in the Main Menu Options i.e. Graphical User Interface (GUI).
First you need to locate the files we are going to edit. The two most important files are the User.ini and the RavenShield.ini.
User.ini holds all the Control settings like Space is for jumping etc and other settings specific to the user. If you used the default installation path it is installed in CProgram Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Raven Shield\Save\Profiles. RavenShield.ini is located in the System dir in the Raven Shield installation, CProgram Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Raven Shield\System. You can navigate to the folders by just using Windows Explorer(not Internet Explorer) or you can right-click on the shortcut for Raven Shield and select Properties and press Find Target and it will bring you to the System because the game launcher, RavenShield.exe is located there.
You open the ini-files just by double-clicking on the User.ini or RavenShield.ini files and it should open in Notepad. If it doesn't open Notepad and drag the file into the Notepad window.
Changing Refresh Rate & V-Sync settings (If you FPS is capped at 60)
As default Vertical Synchronization or V-Sync is enabled in Raven Shield. This has the effect that your Frames Per Second (FPS) will follow the Refresh Rate of your monitor, they are synched. This has a downside to it since Raven Shield by default sets Refresh Rate the game runs in at 60Hz. Many people, mistakenly, tell ppl the solution is to not utilize V-Sync, and turn it off. This is wrong, what you need to do is to force the game to run at a higher Refresh Rate.
*** Skip this part if you don't want to know the tech stuff about v-sync, look for next bold line for this rambling to end Mocking ***
V-sync will not only synch FPS and monitor Refresh Rate Refresh Rate but also set the FPS to the next 'divider' if it can't reach the max FPS set byt the v-sync level. E.g. if you have the game set to 60Hz and V-sync on and your PC while rendering a frame is not powerfull enough to reach the 60 FPS you would think it would just set it to e.g. 55FPS to is possible, but that is not the case if you use v-sync. For the frame to be synched with the 60Hz it has to 'fit in' so the frame will be in sync.
Let's say you run at 60Hz and game can't render it at 60fps or above it will set it to 30 (60*1/2), and if it can't set it to 30 FPS it will set it to 20 (60*1/3) FPS and if it can't set to taht then 15 (60*1/4) and so on. You might think why should I use v-sync then? You should, IMO, becaue most monitors can run at far higher refresh rates than 60Hz and thus the diving of FPS wont break your FPS down so hard, if you set game to e.g. 100Hz a frame will first try to fit into 100Hz, then 50Hz (100*1/2) and then 33 (100*1/3) and then 25 (100*1/4) so you see if you set the refresh rate the highest possible the game has more possibilities to sync the frame and thus getting the optimal image quality and often little loss in FPS.
If RvS could utilize triple buffering it could make use of v-sync even better, because there would be more dividers e.g. at 60Hz if it could set at 60 it woul set at 30 but with triple buffering it would also be possible to set at 3/4 so next fit would be 45 FPS instead of 30 FPS without triple buffering.
Still even if RvS can't use triple buffering, v-sync still offers the optimal image quality, because if frames aren't synched you can experience a problem called tearring where frames get rendered before the former was finished.
Furthermore, even if you choose not to use use vsync on, you should still run the game at its higest possible refresh rate, because a monitor can't render more frames just because the video card spits more out at it. E.g. running at 60Hz refresh rate and getting 200 FPS with v-sync off will not display 200 FPS if your monitor is only rendering 60 at FPS. Also tearing is much less if you run v-sync off at higher refresh rates as opposed to v-sync on at lower refresh rates.
So in summation try v-sync out and see if it doesn't work best, and in any case run game at higest possible refresh rate. Take all these factors into account, and try toying with the different options/settings and see what works best for YOU on YOUR PC. I recommend use v-sync on and higest possible refresh rate, but that is just my oppinion of course.
If you want to read more on v-sync, tearing and double/triple buffering concept read this guide:

*** tech geek part end, mostly Wink2 ***
How to set higest refresh rate and utilize v-sync:
This can be done in Windows by either the Control Panel of the your Ati or Nvidia drivers or by a 3rd party application like Refresh Force.
The other way is to tell the Raven Shield what Refresh Rate to run in, this is the best approch IMO.
The first thing we'll do is to show ALL refresh rates available to you in Raven Shield Options. Right now it isn't showing any, just Resolution we want ot to show both.
1. In your User.ini file, find the setting ShowRefreshRates in section [Engine.R6GameOptions] . Set ShowRefreshRates=True and R6ScreenRefreshRate=60
2. In your RavenShield.ini file, find the setting UseVSync in section [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] and set UseVSync=True if it isn't already, it's True by default.
Now you are able to select your Resolution AND the Refresh Rate you want the game to run at in Options. It is currently set to 60Hz now, as a safe start value, make sure to reselect the in the Options --> Graphics and use a higher refresh rate than 60. If you did it right your Resolution should show up as 1600x1200@60, untill you change it of course. 1600x1200 is just an example of a resolution. Before it only showed 1600x1200 in the Resolution option.
Note:
1. Don't select a Resolution or Refresh Rate that your monitor can't run at, you shouldn't be able to anyway but just in case.
2. Make sure that your V-Sync is set to Application Preference in Windows Display properties -> Settings Tab -> Advanced button. Direct3D tab
3. In Monitors tab ( Windows Display properties -> Settings Tab -> Advanced button. the Monitors tab -the one with ATI logo ) you can set your monitor's Refresh Rate Override to Same as Desktop or at a paricular refresh rate or Disabled.. Mine is set to Refresh Override = Disabled(so that the game controls it and not settings in here which is what we are trying to accomplish)
4. If you are using monitor drivers from manufacturer try setting DCC Enabled. If you are using Microsoft Windows Plug&Play drivers for monitor, turn off DCC or it will probably hide some Refresh Rates that you monitor otherwise would be quite capable to use. If you still get trouble seeing all refresh rates in Raven Shield Graphices Options with right drivers, turn off DCC.
5. After changing settings in Windows Display properties or if you have installed new drivers for you graphics card a good rule of thumb is to go into Raven Shield Options -> Graphics and set the options again, not just visually but select them again.
6. On some system you have to have Vsynch enabled also to get the console commands for gamma etc, to work in Raven Shield.
My settings are DCC enabled and Refresh Rate Override = disabled because the games I play lets me set both the resolution and the refresh rates. If your game doesn't(Raven Shield does), then you can set a particular Refresh Rate in the Override setting. (Or use a tweak util that instruct what Refresh to always set in a given resolution) This is for ATI. Similar settings probably apply in nvidia.
FPS in Multiplayer - Connection setting aka. Netspeed setting and its influence on FPS
If you're playing Multiplayer (MP) the Netspeed setting also set a limit on your FPS like v-sync, but as with v-sync setting we need to think about what we are doing before just settign the wrong value like in the case of v-sync, where most ppl just tell you to turn it off. With netspeed don't just blindly set it to e.g 20000 = T1/T3 setting because ppl tell you to, 20000 will make your FPS better but create other probles e.g. packetloss etc. Read below on how to set optimal netspeed, if you do v-scync and netspeed settings correlate and are both set properly to just the right settings.
NOTE: After Patch 1.6 the Netspeed setting no longer sets a cap on your FPS, it is probably still a good idea to use the way below to calculate the optimal Netspeed
If you have broadband, set your Netspeed setting to 64 * "Refresh Rate". Example: My monitor's Refresh Rate = 100Hz. My Netspeed setting: 64*100 = 6400. In my case I write in Console: "netspeed 6400" without the quotes. You access theConsole by pressing key right under Esc, else set key for it in Raven Shield Options -> Control.
Alternatively in MP press T or Y keys, for say or teamsay and delete/remove say or teamsay, and type command.
This is the same setting as in Raven Shield Options -> Multiplayer where you select connection type: Modem, Cable, ADSL, T1 and T3. Modem = 1500, Cable = 4000, ADSL = 5000, T1 and T3 = 20000.
If you go into the Raven Shield Options, your Netspeed setting will be reverted to the setting that is selected in Multiplayer Options, so you basicly need to use the Netspeed command each time you join a multiplayer game, or make sure your RavenShield.ini is write protected.
Tweaks for getting better performance or better quality
These tweaks are meant to get better performance or better quality in Raven Shield. I outline what the default setting is and what it actually handles and how you can change it.
RavenShield.ini tweaks:
* Setting CacheSizeMegs=32in section [Engine.GameEngine] sets how much System MemoryNOTVideo Memory RAM is set a side in the cache. Setting it higher than the default 32 can increase performance so that the cache can hold more things and it doesn't have to load as much, this will decrease the amount of load lag.
**setting for CacheSizeMegs also recide in RavenShield.mod and IronWrath.mod and AthenSword.mod so changes should probably be added there too**
You can set it this way:
256 MB or less, CacheSizeMegs=32
512 MB, CacheSizeMegs=64
768 MB, CacheSizeMegs=128
1 GB of RAM, CacheSizeMegs=256
or you can use the equation: System Memory(RAM) - 200 e.g 512 MB RAM - 200 = ~300 so CacheSizeMegs=300.
You might think: 'Hey!! I got 1GB of RAM so i'll set it to 800!!', don't do this it'll probably result in errors. Which method to use is a matter of temperment, experiment what works best for you or just use the first apporch.
* Setting TextureMaxLOD=12 in section [WinDrv.WindowsClient] tells Raven Shield how many blending texture stages can handle. My Radeon can handle 16 resulting in better image quality. If you have a low end video card try lowering it, however be aware setting it too low is considered cheatibng on some servers and ladders. Most servers should allow 8-32. The reason it is considered cheating is because it gets easier to distinguish ppl frm the background because of less textures.
* The setting MinDesiredFrameRate=10.000000 tells Raven Shield to try to maintain at least 10 Frames Per Second by decreasing on quality automaticly. If you have trouble with too low FPS you can try and set this higher to get better performance. If you can't render the FPS set in option then maybe you PC system as a whole just can't get that kind of FPS.
* The setting UsePrecaching=True in section [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] can be set to False if you have older gfx card with less than 64 MB for greater performance.
* The setting ReduceMouseLag=False can be set to True if you have trouble with mouselag at the cost of a few FPS.
* The setting UseHardwareTL=True can be set to False if you video card doesn't support hardware Transform and Lighting. Most newer cards do.
* The setting UseHardwareVS=True. Same as above just regarding hardware Vertex Shader.
* The setting UseCubemaps=True sets to show reflective surfaces, like puddles etc. Improves performance if set to false at the loss of little quality as there are not that many reflective surfaces in Raven Shield.
* The setting UseCompressedLightmaps=True can be set to False if you have a video card with 128 MB RAM or more, improves quality and loading.
Sound tweaks - Changing number of audible voices and audio cache in DARE.ini
Org. thread. by Ryan of Mango Platoon.
You cam set the number audible voices and the cache set aside for audio by changing setting in the file Dare.ini. It is located in CProgram Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Raven Shield\System if you used default install location.
These are the settings suggested:
* for Sound Blaster Live! Value and equivalent sound cards:
[Renderer DS3D Options]
DS3D_CACHE_SIZE=6291456
[Sound Manager Options]
NB_AUDIBLE_VOICES=32
[Renderer options]
Output frequency=11025
* For Audigy 1 Series and equivalent cards:
[Renderer DS3D Options]
DS3D_CACHE_SIZE=8388608
[Sound Manager Options]
NB_AUDIBLE_VOICES=32 **OR 48, depending on your system...try both**
[Renderer options]
Output frequency=44100
* For Audigy Series 2 and equivalent:
[Renderer DS3D Options]
DS3D_CACHE_SIZE=8388608
[Sound Manager Options]
NB_AUDIBLE_VOICES=64
[Renderer options]
Output frequency=44100
Those settings should optimize your sound in the game, and improve your hearing to a more truly 3D style. It is not a cheat, it merely optimizes your sound to create fewer bugs and optimize the playback of complex sounds.
I suggest you write-protect the file Dare.ini after you made changes, I have experienced that after editing some of the settings above, after a while and probably after going in Raven Shield Options, it writes the default settings back, but not overwrites it just adds the default settings so there are two entries of the settings above. You write-protect the file by right-click on file and tick the Write Protected options.
Toggle Run
If you want to be able to switch between running and walking with just one keystroke or one mouseclick look here. There are two way the direct keybinding approch.
* Direct keybinding to key or button. (The easiest and quickest):
* Open the User.ini find [Engine.Input] section and NOT [Engine.Planning]
* Find the button or key you want to bind, here right mouse buttion is used. In [Engine.Input] this is RightMouse=. Now just type RightMouse=Toggle m_bPlayerRun. You can also type in console with command: set input rightmouse toggle m_bPlayerRun or type Preferences in console while in Single Player or Main Menu, it will run Raven Shield in a window and open a preferences menu. Look for Raw Keybindings, and edit it there, roughly the same as editing in User.ini directly.
* If you want to alter the Run command to this Toggle Run, you can also do this and this will make it possible to still assign it in Raven Shield Options -> Control. Locate this alias:
Aliases[3]=(Command="Button m_bPlayerRun",Alias="Run")
* Change it to Aliases[3]=(Command="Toggle m_bPlayerRun",Alias="Run")
* Alternatively you could create a new alias, e.g.:
Aliases[15]=(Command="Toggle m_bPlayerRun",Alias="Run2")
* Assign the alias keybind name to a mouse button or key, e.g. RightMouse=Run or RightMouse=Run2 depending on if you edited original alias or made a new alias. If you don't want to use the alias then just do as mentioned RightMouse=Toggle m_bPlayerRun
* Save file, and close.
* NOTE: If you create a new alias and e.g. call it Run2 you can't assign a key to it in the Raven Shield Options -> Control, but only by editing it in the User.ini or in console, e.g. set input rightmouse run2 or by typing Preferences in console in Single Player or Main Menu.
How to change reticules to pre-1.6
After Raven Shield was patched to 1.6, reticules were changed to how they looked in Rogue Spear, but only if you play without first person weapon shown in hud. Look here on how to change reticules to pre-1.6 style. Personally I like the Rogue Spear style rets more.
* Locate RavenShield.mod at CProgram Files\Red Storm Entertainment\Raven Shield\Mods dir.
* Find the comment //Reticule list
* This is how all settings for reticules look by default after patch 1.6:
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WITHWEAPON",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WITHWEAPONDOT",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponDotReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CROSS",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6CrossReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CIRCLE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6CircleReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WRETICULE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="RIFLE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6RifleReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="SNIPER",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6SniperReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CIRCLEDOT",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6CircleDotReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CIRCLEDOTLINE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6CircleDotLineReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="DOT",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6DotReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="GRENADE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6GrenadeReticule")
* To change them to the pre-1.6 reticules, look at first line of the reticules:
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WITHWEAPON",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
* The section marked with yellow is what the guns had before, both in no FPW and with FPW. To set to these settings simply replace what is after m_szReticuleClassName= with "R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule") like so
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WITHWEAPON",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WITHWEAPONDOT",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponDotReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CROSS",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CIRCLE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="WRETICULE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="RIFLE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="SNIPER",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CIRCLEDOT",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="CIRCLEDOTLINE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6WithWeaponReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="DOT",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6DotReticule")
m_aReticuleList=(m_szReticuleId="GRENADE",m_szReticuleClassName="R6Weapons.R6GrenadeReticule")
The only 3 lines I didn't change were "WITHWEAPONDOT","DOT" and "GRENADE", because these are reticules used if zoomed with G36K, and grenade reticule with circle and dot inside and reticule shown after a charge of C4/Claymore or door breach is set.
