Helpful Hints to increase your PC's game performance

I try to game regularly and do hear and see a few people complaining about the quality of their game, below is just a simple list of some regular maintenance routimes that may help you.

To some of you this is old news, this is for the ones that don't know

1. Size of hardrive on your PC and amount of space taken up
the less stuff on your HD the better your game will run.

2. Disk Health ( you should do a disk cleanup once a week)
and defrag regularly.

3. When running the game close out all other programs such
as MSN, any email accounts and all IE Windows

4. One of the largest problems is Spyware, I would recommend
running adaware once a day and especially before a match.

5. Try cleaning your intake and ouput fans on your PC, the
smallest amount of dust on your fan blades can make a
6-10 degree diff on your system. (cooler is cooler)

I hope this helps

dust is my biggest enemy...
Whats the best way to clean out the dust?
Q-tips work will or a small model paint brush..however make sure the dust doesn't go in the pc.

Also there are small hand-held Vacumns(looks like a gun) which are battery operated that work best.

NOTE** remember to shut down your PC and disconnect the power cord before going inside your system
canned air works well too.
also don't be touchin hardware before making sure your hands are static free! or you could break your system!
Shop-vac
Just put yer mom's old Hoover up to the thing and let 'er SUCK!

Erm....
THE REASON I POST IN CAPITALS IS BECASUE LAG IS MAINLY CASUED BY XFIRE. do not join servers using it, do not have it running anytime you have bf running, simply use it as a messanger until you get a better system that can have more virtual memory, alot of users have only 512 or even gig and still lag casue of it, just try it, and it works
I know the best way to get a few extra frames per second.

Toggle off.
poop
My lag issues were with my 100 ft cord, I just got wireless and sadly the wireless is faster, I pinged under 70 on an mt server 3 nights ago!!!!

Can't wait till I get cable though.

I am sure the ppl who complain about the most lag, got thier PC's from Dell or Compaq, that is ur first problem.

Those that didn't, it is most likley spy/adware.

Changing ur video setting does a hell of a lot for frames per second though, it is different for every vid card though.

Also get the latest drivers for ur vid card.

If u get bored check to see how ur system is running here.

If ur having CPU or VPU heating problems.. talk to this guys, just have a look at his PC, and u tell me if this is too much? I mean 535 frames per second!!!!!

Good Call, I had left that one out
Wireless is a complete piece of crap for gaming. It adds 20ms to my ping, not to mention the horrendous ping spikes, packet loss, and random drops in connection.

What kind of wireless card do you have? I had a netgear card and had problems with it, but recently purchased a linksys router and adapter. There are a couple kinks I need to work out, but otherwise it has performed much more consistently.
I got a d-link card and router. Complete and utter crap.

wow, a contructive informative thread. What is this strange place I've wandered into.
^^^ I bet it's not as bad as when you wandered into the "Tool Box" in Atlanta?
What is this Xfire lag you speak of, I have never experienced it?!?
well never heard of the tool box, but since this is the gay capital of the south, I'm assuming that's your insinuation.

However, Backstreet is the only gay club I know of, cause it got headlines recently for the 24/7 liquor ban.

Couple of years ago, I was dating this chick named mandy that worked at Hooters, the entire Hooter's staff went there after work one night. Hordes, and I mean hordes of fine ass women can be found in there. Mainly cause they can avoid drooling idiots spurting out coyote ugly style lines that some guys actually think works.

I get that anyway through my wired router and card. South Carolina sux in my area for broadband. Could just be DSL. I am drooling over getting cable in like 5 months though.

its for people with mid range/low kind of video cards/as well as older cpus/not enough virtual memory
I Just went Through Hell With Mt Isp. It was Solid as hell
then pings were fluxuating heavily, i knew it wasn thedirtybastard server. after 2 failed techs at my house,
adjusting my power levels i changed cable company,s.
Now its stable as hell and no more lag. my 2 cents.
I swear Alk, why is "virtual memory" always your answer to things? lol...

Because most computers have a default that is set too low to get a good performance out of ur PC, but I am sure it isn't the answer to everthing.
dust.. ive always used the garage air compresser set it at about 130psi (be sure its dry air) no water in the lines, watch the dust fly from every hidden place, might want to remove the cd player, this might force dust into places u cant get to.
130 psi? jesus, why not just use a pressure washer and set it to "anihalate"?
If you are running DSL and having problems it is ALWAYS best to put the modem rigth beside the dmark (the place your phone line comes into the house). You intercept the line before it goes into the panel put a splitter there. One goes to the modem the other goes to the panel. You can put your DSL filter there so you will not have to filter any jacks in the house as all will already be done with a single filter. This has solved many problems with alot of my clients including my own. If you need further information on how to do this you can xfire me at fyrebird.

in battlefield try turning your sound settings down a bit from the options page use less channels of sound it helps quite a bit

but it lags the shit out of bf. It really does. There was a custom that lagged down to like 15 fps, it was because of a custom sound. People dropped the quality and blamo.

Actually for matches I do this and although I run a 9800 pro I turn textures down to 20% in the video options menu.

"runs like silk"

why would you turn it down to 20%, i cant see anything when i did that once, i keep same, settings in anywhere i play, i used to lag on maps like aberdeen, huge CAL customs and basily anything that had over 20+ on it, tried anything, didnt work, almost gave up playing, then got a new OCZ powerstream 600 watt psu instead of an antec 550 watt and runs like neverbefore now, eVGA 6800 ultra (16xpsi express) requieres a crap load of power i suppose
20% sig.
well I don't have a leet machine by any means, but my mediocre one runs 42 like silk with maxed audio/video. The only adjustment I've made here recently was cutting off the shadows. You can see alot better inside buildings without them on.

I have made some small adjustments before going into a custom map here recently though. Several of the CAL customs lag me a bit with maxed video and 24 people on the server.
