If you like ASE, stick with it. If you want a faster, better game browser, with built-in chat, and the ability to play IPX games over TCP/IP, $16 is a steal for lifetime usage.
Honestly, I don't know enough about these game browsers to say any of them rock.. I know I hate gamespy is all heh. Every game they have that says 'Powered by GameSpy' has horrible browser issues.. I dunno whos fault it is.. but I don't trust gamespy because of that. Starwars is just another game with 'GameSpy' written on the browser... that works only kinda-sorta.
I would be interested in finding out the differences between the different browser programs .. like the info slink provided about kali.. might help everyone decide, as I'm sure there are alot of ppl like me.. who don't really know that much about these 3rd party browser proggys.
I'm no expert either, but I've used both. Kali is kind of like a combination of ASE, XFire, and IRC. I can track my "buddies" so I know what server they are on, get in chatrooms with them like IRC, trade files, like custom maps if we are going to play a game that has them (C&C Generals for instance), and browse & launch games of course.
The IPX over TCP/IP is kind of outdated, since most games now come with TCP/IP built-in, but back in the old days, me and my buds hooked up and played LAN only games over the internet (Mech Warrior, C&C, etc). Lot's of guys are still using it to play Descent.
Forgot to mention: no adware or spyware. Thats worth alot these days, and is the main reason I don't like free programs. Nothing is ever truly free.
Like I said, I don't work for them, but everyone was looking for an alternative to the in-game browser, so I just wanted to point out that Kali now supports SWB. Post edited by ~slinky~ at 10/11/2004 5:06:35 PM
